Solsticio is a Spanish short film about eleven year old Martina who is on her summer holidays with her family and friends. The film is about something Martina discovers while on this trip and how she deals with the complex feelings about her discovery.
The film production is brilliant. The audio on the film is great with little things like hearing the birds chirping or when you can hear the children playing in the background makes it feel like you are there in the moment. Whenever there is music, it is very fitting to the scene.
Júlia Comas portrays the character of Martina very well for such a young actress. Her performance was sincere and she did a fantastic job of portraying the inner turmoil that Martina was feeling. The character Martina shows a lot of strength.
The isolation of the youngest child was depicted well by all the cast especially in the ball game and the spin the bottle, you could tell that Martina felt left out at times. This is reflective of reality and the dynamic between older and younger children.
It was difficult to determine the family situation in this film and who all these people were. The whereabouts of Martina’s father was unclear, were Martina’s parents separated or did he just not come to the holiday?
Despite this it was an exceptional short film and I applaud Gala Díaz for her excellent writing and directing.
